In Spain there are both public hospitals and health centers as well as private ones. They are always within a short distance from the public and can even be found in smaller towns
Emergency/Health Center
At the emergencies in the health centers the doctors are giving you treatment and usually giving you a document to show when going to the nearest hospital or further extensive treatment.
Foreign non-residents and tourists
Usually they have a travel insurance and they are being treated in the private hospitalss or at the university hospitals if there is a need for a special treatment. This depends on what kind of illness it is and if there are specialists to be found within this field. (see also under “Insurance”).
Foreigners with residency
Are usually going to the nearest public hospital. If the patient is in need of special treatment, he will be sent to a hospital that have those specialists (see also under”Insurance”)
Private hospitals
You can find private hospitals all over Spain and the standard of these hospitals are excellent. You may find most of the specialists in the private hospitals and in the university clinics.
The standard of the hospitals
They are amongst the best in Europe and they are equipped with the most modern, best and the latest technology and machinery. The doctors are highly qualified and there are many specialists within all areas in the medical treatment. Usually there are translators in all the hospitals and in some there are also a multilingual staff. |
